Alberta Nutrition Guidelines Presentation and Workshop
This ready to go presentation on the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines is geared to the childcare component of the guidelines and is suitable for use with childcare staff, administrators or board members. A separate file with the speakers notes is also available for review prior to presenting. The accompanying workshop activities provide practical hands-on activities of interest to childcare staff. The workshop activities contain several optional activities allowing it to be tailored to the interests of the group and length of time available. The lesson plan outline below provides information on using the presentation and workshop activities. All resources were developed by registered dietitians and dietetic interns, using the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines as a reference.

Healthy Preschoolers: A Guide to Writing Nutrition and Physical Activity Policies and Procedures is a manual designed to support preschools, daycares, day homes and early childhood programs in creating healthy environments for children in their care. The manual supports existing nutrition and physical activity regulations and guidelines and encourages preschool programs and childcare providers to adopt policies and procedures for healthy eating and physical activity. The manual contains a six step process for adopting policies and procedures, including a healthy eating and physical activity checklist that programs can use to rate themselves, as well as resources such as “Fun Ideas for Teaching Preschoolers About Healthy Eating and Physical Activity”. Programs are encouraged to adapt the manual to meet their needs and design policies and procedures that are applicable to their environment.

Feeding Tiny Tummies – A Guide for Childcare Providers is a resource designed to support preschools, daycares, day homes and early childhood programs in creating healthy food environments for children in their care. It supports the messages and guidelines from the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines (Alberta Health and Wellness, 2008). It is designed to be used in workshops with providers to deliver support with meal planning. It also provides information related to picky eating, food safety, dental health, physical activity and recipe ideas. Registered Dietitians are encouraged to use this resource in a variety of settings including presentations/workshops to parent groups.
