The School of Public Health, University of Alberta and the Alberta Coalition for Healthy School Communities (ACHSC) are pleased to provide you with information about funding for projects that support healthy school communities available from the Alberta Healthy School Community Wellness Fund. Organizations that meet the eligibility criteria are invited to submit proposals for consideration
In 2007, Alberta Health and Wellness established the Alberta Healthy School Community Wellness Fund to address issues of health and wellness among children and youth within Alberta school communities.
There are two categories of funding:
Category A: Larger Grants
Grants over $10,000 and up to $50,000 per year are available for approved projects. Category A Grants may be approved for successful projects to a maximum of three years depending on when they begin within the Wellness Fund Cycle. Category A Larger Grant projects must incorporate activities that demonstrate community partnerships and address all three of the priority areas of the Wellness Fund including active living, healthy eating, and positive social environments. The next deadline for receiving Category A: Larger Grant applications is November 21st, 2008.
Category B: Smaller Grants
Smaller grants up to $10,000 are available for smaller school community projects or activities or with the approval of the Project Facilitator, for specific components of larger projects. The deadlines for receiving Category B: Small Grant applications are October 10th, 2008 and January 30th, 2009.

The Alberta Coalition for Healthy School Communities and Ever Active Schools hosted Janine Phillips for 2 days as she presented on her work in South Australia. Janine Phillips is the Health Promoting Schools Coordinator at the Centre for Health Promotion, Children Youth and Women’s Health Service in South Australia. Her role is strategic with state-wide responsibility, and requires close collaboration with the three education sectors and other health regions and services.
The SMART Presentation: For the last two years Janine has been involved in the development and trialling of the SMART: School Mapping and Reviewing Tool, which is an online audit and planning tool underpinned by health promoting school principles. This presentation shares information about the development and progress of this project as well as discusses ideas and applications for Alberta, Canada and Australia. Click here [PowerPoint file]
The CHARTER Presentation: The school Health Promotion Charter is the document that ‘mandates’ this approach in schools and was ratified by health, education and child care services early this year in South Australia. Janine has been instrumental in developing and operationalising the charter within health services and school and care sites. She has also developed and commenced an evaluation of a new model of collaborative support to enhance the outcomes of school health and wellbeing initiatives. Click here [PowerPoint file]
